3 Tips To Help Minimize Feeling Nausea During Pregnancy

It is normal to experience nausea during pregnancy and also vomiting, especially in the first four months but the condition varies among pregnant women. Some feel a bit nauseated in the morning and throws up only once throughout the day while others may experience frequent nausea and vomiting.

Usually, the nausea ends after the first trimester but there are a few cases, where it persists up until the fifth month. It is very common to feel nausea during your pregnancy, what causes it is not known. A likely cause would be the changes in the hormones of pregnant women or a blood sugar imbalance.

In general, feeling nauseous does not cause any danger to the mother and baby. However, cases of heavy vomiting will lead to dehydration. Not only will the woman lose liquid but also minerals and nutrients. This rare condition of dehydration caused by severe and constant vomiting and nauseous is known as “hyperemesis gravidarum”, which requires immediate medical help.

There are certain ways to avoid or minimize feeling nausea during pregnancy. For example, get out of the bed slowly. If you feel really nauseated in the morning, have a light breakfast as soon as waking up while still in bed. Have your husband bring you food or leave a snack by your bedside in the evening.

Here are 3 tips to help minimize feeling nausea during pregnancy:

1. Eat a little something such as dry crackers and toasted bread every couple of hours even if you are not particularly hungry. Drink plenty of water, about 12 glasses, or other liquids such as herbal teas and fruit juices. Do not drink alcohol or anything with caffeine. Avoid fatty and spicy foods. Ginger is effective in reducing your nauseous feeling. You should take as tea or in tablet form. It may also help if you eat a snack before you go to bed such as a sandwich, yogurt, milk or cereal.

2. Frequent rest throughout the day is important. Use pillows when you lie down, placing one under your head and another under your legs. Keep your movements slow and avoid abrupt or sudden moves. Remain seated after meals to keep food down.

3. Getting some fresh air will be beneficial. Go out every day for a short walk. If possible, sleep with your bedroom windows open to let in fresh air. Do not smoke. Not only can it trigger nausea during pregnancy but it is absolutely harmful to you and your baby.

Consult your doctor if you experience vomiting three to four times in a day, if you are dehydrated, losing weight or there is blood in your vomit. Your doctor will examine you to find out if you are dehydrated and may ask for a urine test. You may be prescribed anti-nausea tablets.
